A Guide to Laying Subway Tile in 12 Different Ways

Subway tile is everyone's favorite. Although subway tile can seem a bit boring, if you give it a new look and make it stand out, it can really transform your home. Today we will be discussing subway tile and how to lay it in a way that creates a unique look for your home.

Subway tile was introduced to the market in the early 1900s, when it was installed in New York underground train stations. It was so popular that people began to use it in their homes. They added it to their bathrooms and kitchens. It is timeless, but modern-looking too.

The original size of subway tile was 3 in x 6. Today, it comes in many sizes. Because it is versatile and has been around over 100 years, this tile is one of the most popular design elements.

Subway tile is clean and easy to clean. It used to be available in only one color: white. But subway tiles are now available in many other colors, sizes, and textures.

Sometimes it can be overwhelming to find the right subway tile. It doesn't need to be laid horizontally in rows.

Get some ideas for fun subway tile designs and layouts for your kitchen or bathroom.

1. Herringbone at 90 degrees

You can tilt the classic herringbone pattern 90 degrees. This works well in tall spaces like showers to create horizontal and vertical subway tiles instead of one large pattern which can become overwhelming when used in large spaces. The 90-degree herringbone draws the eye up and creates visual interest.

 2. Step ladder

This is like stepping stones on a ladder. This one looks great in a surround shower and makes the space feel bigger and more open.

This is a unique layout that you won't see very often, but it makes a big statement. The step ladder can be used in a niche for the shower, or in a creative subway tiles layout in your kitchen.

 3. Subway

This is the classic subway tiles. This design has the tile stacked like bricks.

This is how subway tiles were first created. It adds a timeless look to any space. Because it is timeless and can be used with other shapes like the hexagon, this is the most popular choice for our clients. A fun twist on the subway tile pattern is what we love.

Below is another bathroom featuring the subway tile. The classic subway tiles were combined with a black hexagon statement walls, which created a stunning feature in this space.

Our clients wanted a space that would allow them to use the timeless subway tile but also wanted something new and unique. The perfect pairing was the hexagon and the subway tile, according to us. You can see more from this bathroom .

4. Geometric Look

It is simple to create this fun look by placing two horizontal tiles alongside two vertical tiles. This creates a bold geometric pattern while keeping it classic. This was done in our kitchen. We love how it turned out.

5. A Diagonal at its Classic

You can add a twist to the subway tile designs! This is as simple as stacking a subway tile like bricks, and then rotating it at a 45 degree angle.

Because it is so unusual and unexpected, this twist on the traditional kitchen design adds surprise to the space. The classic design of the diagonal pattern allows for more space while maintaining the classic style.

6. Stacked Vertical

It's a simple task: stack the tiles vertically, one on top of the other. The vertical pattern can make ceilings seem taller and work well behind counters.

7. 90 Degrees

Rotate the classic stack subway tile 90 degrees to create a new look. This design will increase the size of your room and make your space more interesting than the traditional.

8. Stacked Tile

Similar to the stacked vertical except that the tile is now stacked horizontally.

The grout lines are straight and the tiles line up in a row. This design is great with modern designs and open wood shelving, which creates beautiful horizontal lines throughout your kitchen.

This subway tile pattern is for you if you like the modern, mid-century look or if you prefer a more traditional style. In one of our favourite bathroom remodels, we used horizontal stacked tiles.

Here, we have paired a Mercury Mosaics tile with a bold wallpaper. You can find more information on this project .

9. Stacked Vertical - Alternating

Vertically stacking subway tiles can create a striking shower wall. However, offset the rows to make it more interesting. This pattern has a modern look, and works well in full tile walls such as in bathrooms or to create a statement wall in the kitchen.

 10. Classic Herringbone

This is a favorite that gives subway tile a new look. These tiles create a unique pattern by being diagonal.

It adds a pop to any wall and can also be used as an accent wall. The herringbone pattern is something we use a lot in our homes as well as for clients' floor tiles. This is a timeless look that I believe will never go out of fashion.

We used handmade tile to create the herringbone pattern in this kitchen renovation. This classic herringbone pattern is made stand out by the addition of "whisper grey" grout. See the complete before-and-after .

11. Stacked Horizontal – Alternating

The horizontal alternating tiles can be used in the same way as the vertically stacked alternating. This gives you a more classic look but still creates unique patterns that will look great in a bathroom or laundry room.

12. Herringbone at 45 Degrees

This look is achieved by rotating #10 45 degrees. This pattern is great for smaller bathrooms or kitchens because it allows your eyes to move around the space, making it appear larger. This is a great way for the eye to move around the room and to focus on a particular element.
